Saint Dominic University programs are unique. The curriculum is dynamic and will change as the needs of the industry change. Saint Dominic University provides innovative and flexible education by providing high-tech learning that enables students to develop the knowledge, skills, and professional orientation to meet the challenges of the dynamic global environment.
Students must satisfy degree and course requirements as outlined in the catalog in effect at the time of first enrolling at the University as degree candidates.
Students admitted to one degree program may at times find it beneficial to take a course offered as part of another degree program in order to enhance their inter-disciplinary or cross disciplinary understandings. Students are encouraged to liaise with their academic advisors each term to plan their selection of courses for the following term. A student's acceptance into a class is contingent upon the student's eligibility to take the class. The Registrar will verify that the student has met the prerequisites and course requirements.

COURSE CLASSIFICATION

PRE-BACHELOR COURSES

00-99 Pre-bachelor preparatory and diploma Courses. The credits from these courses cannot be counted towards satisfying the requirements of a degree program.

UNDERGRADUATE COURSES


Lower Division

100-199 Lower division undergraduate courses are general and introductory. They are intended to provide a foundation for advanced work. They are taught at the freshmen and sophomore level as a basic first course in a sequence.
Students are expected to complete all their 100 and 200 level courses in their first and sophomore years.

Upper Division


300-399 Upper division undergraduate courses generally assume prior knowledge or experience in the subject. Their content is more advanced or specific than lower division courses. These courses are taught at the junior and senior level but are also open to sophomores with permission from the academic advisor.
400-499 Upper division undergraduate courses generally assume prior knowledge or experience in the subject, with content more advanced or specific than lower division courses. These courses are taught at the junior and senior level and are not open to freshman or sophomore students

GRADUATE COURSES

GRADUATE PRE_REQUISITE

500-599 Prerequisite courses for master’s and doctoral programs. Also taught to eligible seniors and master’s program students.

MASTER'S

600-799
Graduate level courses open to holders of a bachelor degree subject to prerequisites or other requirements. They are taught in the master’s and doctoral programs .

DOCTORAL

800-999 Graduate level courses open to holders of a bachelor or Master’s degree subject to prerequisite or other requirements. They are taught at the master’s and doctoral programs level but usually as a second course in a sequence at doctoral level. They include independent graduate study involving research, thesis, or dissertation.



Masters and PhD. thesis and dissertations are similarly numbered.


MASTER'S AND PHD BY RESEARCH

As a Masters or PhD research student, you are expected to closely liaise with your research supervisors, discuss with them the various aspects of your research, and receive guidance to ensure that your research activities remain focused. You will learn through your own research activities, and you will be expected to contribute to the knowledge of others through research.
As a Masters or PhD student, you will seek an area in which to develop expertise, but you are encouraged to be knowledgeable in many areas, and you will be encouraged to develop your expertise in a way that crosses conventional disciplinary lines;
Your competence as a scholar ultimately requires an appreciation of, and a commitment to, the foundations of science.
Students following Masters and PhD programs by research are required to successfully defend their thesis before being granted the degree and will not be required to take an examination while all other Masters and PhD students will be required to take a comprehensive examination in their course electives and complete their coursework.

ALL PHD PROGRAMS REQUIRE, UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF A FACULTY MEMBER, THE PREPARATION OF A DISSERTATION, WHICH INCLUDES ORIGINAL WORK AND SHOWS A CONTRIBUTION TO KNOWLEDGE.

If a student studying for a Master’s or PhD degree wishes to prepare for a career as a Faculty member, he or she may opt to the university Faculty preparation program which will help them to develop a successful teaching style under the guidance of senior SDU faculty members.
