The College of Communication and Modern Languages has two departments which offer a wide range of courses in communication, journalism, English and linguistics.

DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION

The department of Communication features the study of communication theory and criticism and the development of practical skills at a time when the communication media and modes around the world are undertaking significant changes. The Department of Communication programs are designed to give an insight into the fast changing information and communication technologies and in-depth knowledge and understanding of mass media while providing students a combination of strategic and tactical knowledge of communication.

The Journalism programs aim at preparing graduates for entry into journalism and related fields by developing an understanding of journalism and its media and communication contexts and acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills to succeed. Journalism programs concentrate more on writing, editing, reporting and interviewing whereas the mass communication programs prepare students to meet the challenges of impacting the world by analyzing the influences of media and culture and combining the study of human communication theory and development to understand and be able to solve communication problems in society.
All graduates from the department are expected to acquire skills in critical analysis, speaking and writing, as well as knowledge of electronic and digital communication. The Department of Communication has a broad range of courses covering advertising, public and interpersonal communication, journalism, broadcasting, news-editorial, publishing, media studies, public relations and new media technology, computer, web design and publication.

The department graduate course and research programs leading to the MA and PhD degrees aim to develop the ability to conduct independent and advanced research and to integrate this skill with a depth of academic knowledge in journalism and mass communication. The programs are designed to prepare professionals for advanced careers in the news media and mass communication through the expansion of areas of expertise and the widening of the intellectual horizons.

DEPARTMENT OF MODERN LANGUAGES:

The study of languages and linguistics covers a variety of subjects from theories of grammar and how language is produced to applications of linguistic knowledge in areas such as language teaching. The Bachelor of Arts degree in linguistics is built around a core curriculum of online language and linguistic theory classes.

The English language programs offer courses in the study of literature, in the production of various kinds of writing, and in the analysis of language.

The graduate programs leading to the degree of Masters and PhD provide an opportunity for acquiring in depth knowledge in the fields of English Language, English literature and linguistics and to prepare graduates for careers in all areas of education, business and government and wherever the ability to use the English language effectively leads to opportunities for advancement and success.
