Degree Requirements
I- GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:
UPPER DIVISION REQUIREMENT:
At least 90 upper-division quarter credits must be taken in a Bachelor degree program in any combination of the university courses, coursework and prior learning units.
GENERAL STUDIES DOMAINS OF KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENT:
The University provides a range of courses to assist students in the completion of General Studies domain requirements and to help students acquire a wide range of knowledge and skills. Bachelor degree programs have a minimum General Studies requirement of 50 quarter credits.
RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS FOR TRANSFER STUDENTS
Of the last credits applied to a Bachelor degree, at least 110 quarter credits must be taken at University.
II- SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:
UNDERGRADUATE DEGREES
ASSOCIATE DEGREES
The program consists of courses carrying a minimum of 95 quarter credits. It requires full-time attendance for two academic years or the equivalent in half-time attendance, independent study, work study or other similar programs.
The degree includes a minimum requirement of 50 credits of general education and a mastery of skills and knowledge against specified performance standards in specific areas or disciplines.
BACHELOR’S DEGREE
The bachelor’s degree will be awarded to students upon successful completion of a program that requires a minimum of 180 undergraduate quarter credits . It requires full-time attendance for four academic years or the equivalent in half-time attendance, independent study or other similar programs.
The bachelor degree will be awarded to students who successfully complete the 50 quarter credits minimum general education core, a minimum of 70 quarter credits of upper-division courses (courses carrying 300 or 400 numbers- See Programs section), and a minimum of 60 quarter credits in the major field of study, including a minimum of 40 quarter credits of upper-division courses in the major of study. The student must also demonstrate competency and mastery of skills and knowledge against specified performance standards in a specific area or discipline.
MASTER’S DEGREE
Master’s degrees will be awarded to students who successfully complete a program that requires full-time study, or the equivalent in half-time with minimum of 45 quarter credits beyond the bachelor’s degree that includes at least 30 graduate-only quarter credits in the field of study.
The programs consists of work beyond the bachelor level for two academic years of full time study and research work or the equivalent in half-time attendance, independent study, work study or other similar programs. In addition to various courses, a thesis is required for most Master's degree programs. The master's thesis should provide evidence of the graduate student's ability to carry out independent investigation and to present the results in clear and systematic form.
The student must demonstrate mastery of skills and knowledge against specified performance standards in a specific area or discipline.
A candidate who wishes to obtain a Master's degree by research must pursue a program of supervised research for a minimum period of one year full-time from the date of first registration for the program or two years part-time from the date of first registration for the program.
DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (PH.D.) DEGREE
The doctoral degree will be awarded to students who complete a minimum of 90 graduate quarter credits beyond the Masters degree or 135 quarter credits beyond the Bachelor degree. The student must demonstrate mastery of skills and knowledge against specified performance standards in a specific area or discipline and the capacity to do creative and independent work and research. Program requirements include a balance of credit hours for required coursework, research, and dissertation preparation. A thesis is required for all PhD programs.
Successful completion of the exams and certain coursework are required for advancement to doctoral candidacy.
A candidate who wishes to obtain a PhD degree by research must pursue a program of supervised research for one of the following minimum periods as applicable:
Two years full-time from the date of first registration for the program for students with a acceptable Masters degree
Three years full-time from the date of first registration for the program for students with a acceptable Bachelor degree
Four years part-time from the date of first registration for the program for students with a acceptable Masters degree
Six years part-time from the date of first registration for the program for students with a acceptable Bachelor degree
On completion of their research thesis, students are required to defend their thesis in front of a panel of examiners.
Subject to approval of the appropriate Academic Advisor and the Academic Program office, students in good academic standing that demonstrate an ability to manage an above normal study load are allowed to complete their academic programs in a shorter period by increasing their course load as detailed in the Program Acceleration section.
